Prompt library
Why a team needs a library
When team members work with AI individually and on an ad hoc basis, each person develops their own prompts for similar tasks. This leads to:
- Inconsistent output quality across people for the same type of task.
- Duplicated effort: each person reinvents prompts that someone else has already refined.
- Loss of knowledge: when someone leaves the team, their prompt collection disappears.
A prompt library turns individual prompting knowledge into a shared team asset.
What a well-organized prompt library includes
Each library entry should include:
- Name and description: what task this prompt solves.
- Prompt text: with clearly marked variables (for example, in square brackets or curly braces).
- Usage instructions: what information must be provided and in what context it works best.
- Example of expected output: so that whoever uses it can assess whether the result is correct.
- Version history: who created it, when, and what improvements have been applied.
Common prompt types in agile teams
- Generating user stories from a business need.
- Converting user stories into specs for AI agents.
- Generating acceptance criteria in Given/When/Then format.
- Code review focused on security or duplication.
- Summarizing technical decisions from a working session.
Common mistake
Creating the library but not maintaining it. A prompt library that isn't updated when AI models change, when the team learns better phrasings, or when project contexts evolve quickly loses its value. The library needs someone responsible for its maintenance and an update process as clear as the one for the product code.
