SWEBOK (Software Engineering Body of Knowledge) is a guide promoted by the IEEE Computer Society that identifies and describes the knowledge areas that make up software engineering as a discipline. Its goal is to reach a consensus on the body of knowledge that defines this field of engineering, and it serves as a basis for the training and certification of professionals.

The first version of the SWEBOK was published in 2004 and version 3 in 2014. It is maintained by the IEEE Computer Society's Software Engineering Coordinating Committee.

Knowledge Areas

SWEBOK organizes software engineering knowledge into fifteen main areas (v3.0):

  1. Software Requirements.
  2. Software Design.
  3. Software Construction.
  4. Software Testing.
  5. Software Maintenance.
  6. Software Configuration Management.
  7. Software Engineering Management.
  8. Software Engineering Process.
  9. Software Engineering Models and Methods.
  10. Software Quality.
  11. Software Engineering Professional Practice.
  12. Software Engineering Economics.
  13. Computing Foundations.
  14. Mathematical Foundations.
  15. Engineering Foundations.

Relationship with Agility

SWEBOK is the map of the software engineering territory, not a development method. Agile frameworks—Scrum, XP, Kanban—are methods applied within that territory: they mainly address the areas of construction, testing, process management, and requirements, but they do not define the knowledge of algorithm design, mathematical foundations, or software economics.

Understanding the SWEBOK helps agile professionals place their practices within the broader context of software engineering.

Common mistake

Confusing SWEBOK with a process standard or a methodology. SWEBOK describes what knowledge software engineering encompasses, not how to develop software. It does not prescribe any specific development process. It is a reference guide for the profession, not a user manual.
