Cultural compatibility is one of the five support factors assessed in the AgiLevel model. It measures the extent to which the organization's current cultural model is compatible with the change actions required for the desired agile transformation process. Together with executive involvement, it is one of the two factors that AgiLevel considers decisive: if cultural compatibility is low and readiness for change is also low, the transformation process carries extreme risk.

How It Is Assessed

AgiLevel assesses cultural compatibility at two points:

  • Current situation: the degree of compatibility between the present cultural model and the type of agility to be achieved.
  • Readiness for change: the organization's willingness and ability to evolve its culture in the required direction.

The rating scale for the current situation is:

Value Criterion
0 The company's cultural model is clearly incompatible with the necessary change actions.
1 The company's cultural model needs significant evolution to become compatible with the necessary change actions.
2 The company's cultural model is relatively compatible with the necessary change actions and needs some changes.
3 The company's cultural model is fully compatible and aligned with the necessary change actions.

Relationship with cultural paradigms

Cultural compatibility is directly related to the organization's cultural paradigm. An organization in the orange paradigm (achievement, competition, meritocratic hierarchy) may have high compatibility with agile scaling frameworks such as SAFe but low compatibility with the organizational agility required by the values of trust, horizontality, and shared purpose.

AgiLevel does not prescribe which paradigm is "correct": it prescribes honestly assessing what kind of agility is compatible with the current paradigm and how far there is to go to reach the desired goal.

Signs of Low Cultural Compatibility

  • The organization punishes mistakes and transparency about problems.
  • Decisions are made based on hierarchy, not competence.
  • Teams have no real autonomy over how they do their work.
  • The silo culture is strong: each department optimizes its own metrics without considering the system as a whole.
  • Change is perceived as a threat, not as an opportunity.

Common mistake

Overestimating cultural compatibility to justify starting a transformation process. Assessing cultural compatibility requires honesty. Consultants and executives who want the process to move forward have incentives to score this factor higher than the evidence warrants. An overly optimistic assessment produces a transformation plan with hidden risks that materialize once the process has already begun and is harder to redirect.
