Double-Track (doble carril in Spanish) is a working model with two simultaneous speeds for teams that develop software with generative AI tools. It defines two distinct operating modes: a fast track geared toward exploring and validating hypotheses through vibe coding, and a robust track geared toward building production code to full standards through vibe engineering.

It is an emerging practice described in Scrum Manager's guide Scrum en equipos con IA [Scrum in Teams with AI, in Spanish] to manage the speed gap between conversational code generation (10x-100x faster) and robust production engineering.

The two tracks

Fast track — Vibe coding

  • Purpose: quickly validate hypotheses with users. The code does not go to production.
  • Quality: secondary. What matters is the speed of learning.
  • Speed: 10x-100x faster than the robust track.
  • Key question: "Is this worth building?"

Robust track — Vibe engineering

  • Purpose: production code with full standards.
  • Quality: strengthened DoD, SDD, QA, and human review.
  • Speed: slower, but reliable and maintainable.
  • Key question: "Is it built correctly?"

When to move from fast → robust

The transition from the fast track to the robust track is justified when all five conditions are met:

  1. The hypothesis has been validated with real users.
  2. Technical feasibility has been demonstrated (no massive refactoring needed).
  3. The requirements are clear (the spec can be written).
  4. The ROI justifies the cost of robust engineering.
  5. The technical risk is contained.

When to move back from robust → fast

The reverse direction is also valid:

  1. A significant change in requirements that invalidates the current spec.
  2. Unforeseen emergent complexity that makes the code unmaintainable.
  3. A strategic pivot by the Product Architect.

Warning signs

  • The idea has spent more than 3 sprints in vibe coding without clear validation with users.
  • The implementation has spent more than 5 sprints in vibe engineering without delivering value.

Common mistake

Skipping the fast track and building every idea directly in the robust track. The speed of the fast track makes it possible to validate hypotheses at a very low cost before committing robust engineering capacity. Building ideas in robust mode that later turn out to be invalid is one of the most costly forms of waste in AI-assisted product development. Double-Track is not a shortcut: it is a system for avoiding wasting robust engineering work on unvalidated ideas.
