The five events
Sprint
The sprint is not just an event: it is the container for all the others. It is a fixed-length iteration (one to four weeks) within which the team works to produce a usable increment. The sprint is the heartbeat of the Scrum cycle. See Sprint.
Sprint Planning
Working meeting at the start of each sprint in which the team and the Product Owner agree on the Sprint Goal and select the stories that will go into the iteration. It produces the Sprint Backlog. See Sprint Planning.
Daily Scrum
A short meeting (15 minutes maximum) that the team holds every day to synchronize work and detect impediments. Its purpose is progress toward the Sprint Goal, not individual reporting. See Daily Scrum.
Sprint Review
A meeting at the end of the sprint in which the team presents the built increment to the stakeholders, gathers feedback, and adapts the Product Backlog if necessary. See Sprint Review.
Sprint Retrospective
Meeting at the end of the sprint in which the team reflects on its way of working and agrees on at least one improvement to adopt in the next sprint. It was incorporated into the standard Scrum framework in the first decade of the 2000s (see Retrospective).
Maximum Duration by Sprint Length
Event timeboxes are proportional to the length of the sprint:

Common mistake
Systematically extending events "because there's a lot to talk about." The time-box is not a suggestion: it is a management mechanism that forces the team to prioritize within the available time. If Sprint Planning always runs over, the problem is not the maximum duration; it is that the backlog is not sufficiently refined before the meeting. The solution is to improve refinement, not to extend Sprint Planning.
