Product Backlog Building
When a product or an initiative gets started, you need to move from an idea to an ordered work list without falling into the trap of detailing up front an entire backlog that will go stale. PBB provides a procedure for that step: it starts from the output of an inception—the initial framing of the product, its goals, and its users—and turns it into specific, prioritized items.
From Inception to Backlog
The output of PBB is exactly what working with stories later teaches you to structure and maintain: a backlog with items of different types, ordered by value. That is why PBB connects directly with Scrum Manager's Agile Inception skill, which supports the preceding framing phase. The natural sequence runs from discovery to delivery: research produces opportunities, the inception frames them under a goal, PBB turns them into an initial backlog, and from there refinement with examples, splitting into vertical slices, and story mapping come into play.
It is worth placing PBB alongside its neighboring techniques without confusing their purposes: the impact map connects the goal with the behaviors to be triggered, the opportunity tree organizes what the research uncovered, and the user journey shows how the activity is experienced today. Each one answers its own question well; using one for another's task leaves the work without data or without structure.
With artificial intelligence
Tools offer to generate an initial backlog from a product description, and they do it fluently. The risk is the same as with all assisted work: a backlog generated without data documents nothing, because it comes not from any observation but from what the model has seen in other products. The use that pays off is the reverse: asking the assistant to critique a backlog built by the team, to find gaps, missing items, and debatable priorities.
Common mistake
Treating the initial backlog as final. PBB produces a starting point, not a fixed plan: the backlog is emergent and changes with what is learned through delivery. Detailing all its items up front wastes effort on pieces that may never be built and gives a false sense of control. PBB brings order to the start; continuous refinement keeps the backlog alive.
