The Product box is an inception activity that involves building a physical prototype of the product's retail box so that the team and stakeholders can collectively define and internalize the product vision. It supports collaborative work in kick-off meetings and product launch workshops.

How to run the activity

The activity consists of building a prototype of the box that would contain the product if it could be sold in physical stores. The underlying principle is that the constraint of having to communicate the product within the limited space of a box forces the team to prioritize and simplify: which features are the most important, how the benefits for the user are described, and what sets the product apart from its competitors.

  1. Participants are divided into groups of 4 to 6 people.
  2. Each group is given cardboard, markers, stickers, and materials to build a physical box.
  3. For 30 to 45 minutes, each group designs its version of the product box, including: product name, slogan, main features (in user language, not technical language), benefits, potential customers, and any other element they consider relevant to communicate the product's value.
  4. Each group presents its box to the rest of the team.
  5. The common points and the differences between the various versions are discussed.
  6. The facilitator synthesizes the key elements that emerge from the presentations to build a shared vision.

Benefits

  • It forces the team to think from the user's and the market's perspective, not from a technical one.
  • It sparks conversations about what is truly valuable in the product and what is secondary.
  • The physical, creative nature of the activity increases commitment and the retention of what has been agreed.
  • It produces tangible artifacts that can serve as a visual reference throughout the project.
  • It aligns the team around a shared vision before building begins.

Common mistake

Using the Product box when the product is already defined. The activity is most valuable when the product vision is still open, because it is while building the box that the team negotiates and aligns on that vision. Using it to "confirm" a vision that has already been decided reduces the activity to a cosmetic exercise.
