Perspective pause
How to apply it
- The facilitator pauses the conversation at a moment of tension or a possible blind spot.
- They propose an explicit pause: "Let's take five minutes to look at this from other perspectives."
- They assign each person (or subgroup) a specific perspective: end customer, support team, non-technical executive, user with a disability, competitor, regulator.
- Each person briefly prepares how they would see the situation from that perspective.
- The perspectives are shared, and the conversation continues with that additional information.
When to use it
- In planning meetings where the team has been debating the same solution for a while without considering others.
- In retrospectives where the same problems keep recurring without anyone seeing the systemic cause.
- In product discovery sessions where the team tends to validate its own hypotheses instead of challenging them.
- Before making architecture or product decisions with long-term impact.
Common mistake
Assigning perspectives the team already knows well. The perspective pause is valuable when it forces people to consider perspectives the team usually ignores. If all the participants are backend engineers and the assigned perspectives are those of other backend engineers, the pause does not broaden the scope of consideration. The most useful perspectives tend to be the ones furthest from the team's profile: the least technical user, the person with the least domain knowledge, whoever would foot the bill.
